An ebay purchase of a vintage Speedball lettering pen set yielded an extra bonus… numerous alphabets on paper rendered in both pen and ink and via pencil sketches.
One such design in rough pencil layout is a classic serif typeface often found on many passenger and freight trains, trolley cars and busses.
This “Railroad Roman” was scanned from the original sketches and then re-drawn digitally, all along retaining the charm and attractiveness often found in hand lettering.
The end result is Streetcar JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Kirkly - A Slightly Serif Font. Our first font release is an imaginative hybrid font family that is a mix between a sans serif and serif design. In all, it contains 68% fewer individual serifs than a traditional serif font. The result is a clean, stylish, humanistic design that conveys strength, movement and individuality.
I’m reminded of Art Webb’s famous design principle, “If everything is bold, then nothing is bold.”
“To me, serif fonts have always seemed to be overdone and garish. My goal in creating Kirkly was to remove as many serifs as possible, and still retain an elegant, tasteful, well-balanced serif typeface. I think I was successful in creating a new genre, and I intend to experiment with this concept in future font designs.” — Kirk

Merkén is a typeface inspired in the Slab Serif fonts designed by Vincent Figgins in the early 20th century: his famous designs; Antique and Egiziano, were the main references when developing this project. The typeface is perfect for headlines, medium length texts, branding and advertising. His original set is strong and spicy but it also has an alternative set which is cursive and kind.
